theb-sideofthings:

So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, comformity, and conservatism, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun. -CHRISTOPHER MCCANDLESS

I strongly believe that few moments come in an individuals life when they realize they need to change in some way or another. That if they don’t change they will forever feel trapped. We come to the moment where we must dissent against ourselves, where we must make drastic changes in order to feel alive. I am challenged by the words of Henri Nouwen, “Revolution is better than suicide.” That unless we choose to make drastic changes in our lives we will never live our lives to our fullest potential. God is most glorified when we live our lives to our fullest potential. Let me give you an example. When we live our lives with unforgiveness, hatred, or bitterness our lives are shaped by these emotions. An individual who is filled with hatred will never be able to fully love. We all have areas in our lives that hinder us from living our lives to our fullest potential, that is why sometimes we must dissent against ourselves. I have been on a road similar to the one I find myself in with the need for drastic change in my life. I am reminded by the lyrics of Lauryn Hill-“I find it hard to say(Rebel). The words that create such a stir in my life are, “We must destroy in order to rebuild”. Sometimes you just have to start all over again because what you are building on will just not hold. Perhaps   it was good during one season in your life but now it is not good enough. It is better to rebuild everything in your life than to continue building on something that will eventually collapse.
And while the people sleep, too comfortable to face itYour lives are so incomplete, and nothing, and no one, can replace itNo, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, noAnd what I gotta say, and what I gotta sayAnd what I gotta say, and what I gotta sayAnd what I gotta say, and what I gotta sayAnd what I gotta say, and what I gotta sayIs rebel… rebel, rebel, rebel, rebel, rebel, rebelRebel, rebel, rebel, rebel, rebelRepent, the day is far too spent, rebel… rebel!Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up…Wake up and rebelWe must destroy in order to rebuild
Spiritual disciplines is an area that I have struggled to establish in my life therefore I am in need of drastic changes. This is going to be one of my summer reads.
“The path starts where we are and as we are-no matter what precisely that means, or how despairing our situation may seem from the human perspective.”                         -Dallas Willard
The biggest obstacle for me is having an idea where I am going? Realizing that first step toward transformation is just taking the initiative to start. However, even starting seems overwhelming, as I do not know where to begin. In a way it can almost seem hopeless. It is easy to remained focus on where I am not or where I should be instead of just realizing where I am and begin making the necessary changes to get me where I need to be. I will make the words of J.I. Packer the aim of my purpose concerning spiritual disciplines.
“What where we made for? To know God. What aim should we set for our lives? To know God.”
